A girl born in a tiny, impoverished shtetl in Eastern Europe immigrates to New York where she marries a handsome pharmacist whose parents hailed from the very same shtetl. During their nearly 60 years together, they raised a family and worked side-by-side in his drug-stores. She carried on remarkably for 23 years after his passing, living gracefully as her family’s beloved matriarch until age 102.

Newlyweds fled Nazi Germany in 1938 on one of the last ships carrying Jewish refugees to safety. As the ship pulled away from the dock, the husband vowed that he would someday prove the failure of Hitler’s plan—to rid Germany of Jews forever—by returning to his hometown as a successful man who could afford to stay in the town’s fanciest hotel. Years later, he fulfilled his vow.
